2008 marked the 10th time (’78, ’86, ’95, ’98, ’02, ’04, ’05, ’06, ‘07’ and ’08) and the 5th straight year Corvette has paced the Indy 500 race. This 2008 model is also the first time since the original 1978 pace car that you could order a replica from the factory in coupe version. A total of 500 replicas were produced with a mix of convertibles and coupes.
A convertible actually paced the race along with a customized Z06/E85 concept car that runs on E85 ethanol fuel similar to the E100 fuel used by all cars running in the IndyCar Series. The car was driven by two-time Indy champ, Emerson Fittipaldi, who also signed inside the console door of each of the replica cars. The Mathews car is number 284 . |
