The
500T was the first purpose built trail bike Norton produced. Introduced
in 1949 the 500T was first shown at the 1948 Earls Court Show and
was the result of two years work. The new model came with a 500 cc
overhead valve engine fitted into a modified 16H frame. The rigid
frame had a shorter wheel base and redesigned steering geometry. The
total weight of the 500T was kept down to 320 lbs by replacing the
iron cylinder head and barrel with a new alloy version. The 500T had
no lights or dynamo and with 7.5 inches of ground clearance it all
added up to be a highly competitive and successful trail bike. It
was dropped from the Norton range in 1954 when they were taken over
by AMC. |
